Defense takes yet another hit with another transfer

Postby BGSU33 » Sun Mar 24, 2019 6:16 pm

Antwan Johnson, BG's highrest rated recruit from last year's class, is the latest defection. He redshirted last year and came in very hyped and he's the latest promising player to leave a defense already in need of help everywhere. As if the defense wasn't already a concern, we made a curious (to put it lightly) hire at DC and now we're losing starters and highly rated underclassmen. It's all very concerning to say the least.

We've actually had a low number of transfers after a complete coaching change....

I think he's the first defection that is from or near Ohio. He's from Springfield. That's what sticks out to me.

I expect a lot of the out of state kids not to make it. It is tough being far from home. If something goes wrong at home, it takes more than a short drive to check in. If you need a breather from the stresses of football, you don't have much of a support network besides the football team to decompress. So when an Ohio kid who has all those advantages built in decides to look elsewhere, that is something of a concern.

New staff, new ideas, new schemes. Perhaps he didn't see this panning out for him here. Wish him the best.

All valid points, but it still boils down to one thing. We need talented players. We can't keep seeing the number of upper tier guys from our recruiting classes or proven upperclassmen depart like we have the last few years and expect to see a change in our record or finish. We're going to keep spinning our wheels at the bottom of the MAC and FBS until we start recruiting AND retaining the kind of guys we continue to lose. We're losing top-tier guys from our classes and filling their places with walk-ons and D-III transfers and it's a recipe for disaster, or essentially, what we're stuck with now.

Interesting. He was committed to Michigan.

Jerry Judd also left the team. If I recall, played ST and was back up LB.

Making a change like BG had to do (with the coaching staff) takes time. It's hardly Coach Loeffler's fault that the program had become the train wreck it was when he decided to take the job; and transfers like this are going to happen because of all the problems in the program prior to the coaching change.

In general, it probably takes a new football coaching staff between 2-4 years to make all the changes needed to get a program back in good stead. The obvious exception is when you have the good fortune of finding a coach like Urban Meyer. We need to be patient here. The mistakes made with the hiring of the last two coaches (and yes, Baber was also a mistake, because he did nothing to help sustain the success Clawson created), are going to take more than a few months to overcome.

Loeffler is in basically the same position Clawson was in. He inherits a program that suffered greatly under the previous coaching staff in terms of off field trouble and attrition. He inherits talent on key places offensively but no depth defensively. Clawson built a great program slowly but surely. 2010 was a rough ride and 2011 was growing pains.

I always look back on 2012 fondly. That was one of my all time favorite BG teams. I think it is a favorite because all the struggles in previous years paid off in a big way. I only hope Loeffler can build a program the steady way too with a major payoff eventually for some players on the current team.

The hits to the defense just keep coming and coming. LB Deandre Fitz-Henley, another one of our top recruits from last year, is gone. It's another huge blow to an already decimated defense that was on life support before all the defections. Add to it, CB Darius Wortham is gone too. He was one of only a few guys with any kind of CB experience and now, adios. I. can't even begin to stomach what this defense is going to look like this season.

What will the defense look like? Probably a lot like 2010 with freshmen all over the place. It won't be pretty. But it should pay off in the coming years.

This has to stop immediately. All these players exiting the program is unreal. I think the coaching staff needs to be a all football organization, players, ad, coaches meeting. Everybody voice their concerns , players etc..

Relax 44 :) The last thing we need is a meeting. The players know what is expected. They know what the program expectations and goals are. The staff has communicated clearly. The players as a group are hungry for coaching, discipline or higher bar in all areas and a chance to build a winner.

If you don't want to be a BG Football player, good luck elsewhere. This is understandable on a player's part. And on a staff's part. We will do things together and we will do it this way together. If someone wants to go elsewhere, good luck. So this summer is critical in terms of strength and conditioning. And then Fall Camp will ratchet up even more. Way up.

This will be a multiyear process. If some guys don't want to be part of it, go. So some went. We have truly a ton of guys who want to be a part of it. Spoke with our signed incoming recruits at spring "game". Spoke to Kyle Junior at spring "game". Respect and enjoy meeting with both of them. Junior will go elsewhere and we wish him well. But the twenty incoming guys? Get ready. Be a Falcon.

Multiyear process.

Go Falcons!
